Caissa refers to a mythological nymph or deity introduced in an Italian poem called Scacchia Ludus, published in 1527. In this story, we hear about a game of chess between the Roman gods Mercury and Apollo. Later, in 1763, a poem written by Sir William Jones makes her officialy become the Goddess of Chess. To this day, Caissa is still referenced by chess players: In order to avoid the wrath of the Goddess, a player is determined to play the game in a careful and specific way.
